Sing, “Don’t Waste the Pit”

Psalm 34 was written during one of the lowest moments of David's life. Saul had decided to kill him, forcing David to flee into the wilderness. Fear began to influence his decisions. After receiving food from Ahimelech the priest and taking Goliath's sword from Nob, David panicked when he realized Saul would soon discover his location. In desperation, he fled to Gath, Goliath's hometown, hoping to find safety among Israel's enemies. When the Philistines recognized him, David became terrified and pretended to be insane in order to save his life. Yet despite David's fear, poor decisions, and imperfect faith, God graciously rescued him. Looking back on that experience, David wrote Psalm 34 as a testimony. It shows us what to do after being in the pit.
